Bespoke iPad application and web development

Net Texts approached Icreon as an entrepreneurial venture. They wanted to launch an iPad application for students through which teachers could provide customised course materials via a web portal. Icreon has worked with Net Texts right through the testing, development and initial launch phases of this project.

Project requirements

The first step was to run a pilot project to see if handheld tablet computers such as iPads could effectively replace students’ course books. For this pilot, Icreon’s brief was to design and build:

• A web portal that would allow teachers to create customised courses for their students online and augment the content by selecting relevant supporting material from an extensive library of documents, websites, videos, slideshows, e-books, audio books and web links.
• An app through which the students could access all of this course material from their iPads.

Our solution

Working alongside a project manager, Icreon’s development team created an entirely bespoke solution for Net Texts using Microsoft SQL Server and C# for the server and web portal and Objective C for the iPad application. During a successful pilot, eighth grade students in six schools swopped their course books for iPads and based on positive early results, the project has been expanded to include seventh and ninth grade students too.

The project has been recognised by Apple as an example of best practice in mobile application development. You can see a demo of the app that Icreon developed on the Net Texts website .
